The Albany Kennel Club, Inc. is committed to Public Education. Our Public Education Coordinator has been working with schools throughout the Capital District for nearly fifteen years. Statistics show that 90% to 95% of dog bite victims are children aged 8 and under. Let’s teach our children how to act responsibly and safely around our canine friends. To do this, we offer several programs:
The AKC’s Canine Ambassador Program: You can invite our Canine Ambassador to make a presentation to your class or group. Canine Ambassadors make classroom presentations to children about responsible dog ownership, canine safety and the importance of training. The Ambassador is accompanied by a trained, AKC registered purebred dog. Ambassadors work with teachers or group leaders to tailor the presentations to best meet the needs of the children. Presentations are made in classrooms, auditoriums or gymnasiums. Ambassadors may also hold outdoor presentations, weather permitting. The presentation by our Canine Ambassador includes a hands-on period that allows the children to meet and pet a dog.
Books in Schools Program: The Albany Kennel Club, for the last year and a half, has been running the Books in Schools Program. Our Club has been donating dog books to the school libraries in high schools, middle schools and elementary schools all over the Capital District. If your school library has not received a copy of the “AKC’s Complete Dog Book” and/or the “AKC’s Complete Dog Book for Kids”, contact our Public Education Coordinator to get your set!!
Community Awards Program: To educate the public about the wonderful services provided by canine citizens, the Albany Kennel Club has begun to recognize the quiet heroes of the Capital District. Community Awards are for local dogs that have gone above and beyond their roles as companions and service providers. There are three categories for which a dog can be nominated; Service Dog Award; Community Service Award; and the Abbe Award. Nominations must be received by February 1 each year. For more information on this program, or to nominate a worthy dog you know, contact our Publication Education Coordinator.

PUBLIC EDUCATION NEWS The AKC Breed Video Collection on VHS tapes has been donated to various local Capital District Public Libraries as a gift from the Albany Kennel Club, Inc. If you are researching various dog breeds, these tapes will provide valuable breed characteristic information to help you decide which breed is right for you and your family. If anyone would like more information on a particular breed and your library does not have the tape you wish to borrow, be sure to request an inter-library loan. |

PUBLIC EDUCATION NEWS The Albany Kennel Club once again participated in the Capital District “Paws For A Cause” Pet Fair at the Empire State Plaza. We passed out AKC brochures on Canine Health and the various AKC Events such as Field Trials, Conformation, Obedience and Jr. Showmanship. We fielded many questions from the public about various breeds of dogs. And we also passed out many of the AKC’s brochures on safety around dogs for parents to discuss with their children. The club also made presentations to the attendees about the Canine Good Citizen Program and did Obedience demonstrations on the Main Stage at the event. |

PUBLIC EDUCATION NEWS The Albany Kennel Club has been bringing companionship and cheers to patients at the Albany VA Hospital. ‘Ranger’, a South African Boerboel has been making Therapy Dog Visits there. This Christmas Season Ranger and his handler Jeannette O’Hanlon brought a small gift to them; palm held stress balls. So not only did Ranger provide mental and emotional therapy, but brought them physical therapy too. Ranger, also an AKC Canine Good Citizen, brings joy to many of the patients at the VA, who look forward to his visits each week as part of the Albany Kennel Clubs’ Public Education Programs. He also uses his time there to educate everyone about canines and their world. See Ranger’s photos here. |
